About Those Non-Disappearing Pacific Islands

“Even more insidiously, doom-mongering makes us panic and seize upon the wrong responses to [perceived dangerous] global warming. At a cost of between $1 trillion and $2 trillion annually, the Paris climate agreement, recently ratified by China, is likely to be history’s most expensive treaty. It will slow the world’s economic growth to force a shift to inefficient green energy sources.”

NOT A LOT OF PEOPLE KNOW THAT

Bjorn Lomborg writes:

Once a year or so, journalists from major news outlets travel to the Marshall Islands, a remote chain of volcanic islands and coral atolls in the Pacific Ocean, to report in panicked tones that the island nation is vanishing because of climate change. Their dispatches are often filled with raw emotion and suggest that residents are fleeing atolls swiftly sinking into the sea.

Yet new research shows that this is not the entire—or even an accurate—picture. Acknowledging this doesn’t mean that global warming isn’t real, or that world leaders and scientists shouldn’t tackle the adverse effects of climate change, but hype and exaggeration serve no one.

Inconvenient: Giant Coral Reef That ‘Died’ In 2003 Teeming With Life Again

“Our [alarmist] projections were completely wrong,” he says.
“Sometimes it is really nice to be proven wrong as a scientist, and this was a perfect example of that.” –Jane Palmer, BBC, 6 September 2014

What other alarmist predictions, exaggerated claims and catastrophic projections are you fed in order to push the global warming agenda?

Watts Up With That?

From the “global warming and ocean acidification will kill everything, forever” and the “nature always finds a way” department comes this inconvenient truth.

Back From The Dead: Giant Coral Reef That ‘Died’ In 2003 Teeming With Life Again

In 2003, researchers declared Coral Castles dead.

On the floor of a remote island lagoon halfway between Hawaii and Fiji, the giant reef site had been devastated by unusually warm water. Its remains looked like a pile of drab dinner plates tossed into the sea. Research dives in 2009 and 2012 had shown little improvement in the coral colonies.

Then in 2015, a team of marine biologists was stunned and overjoyed to find the giant coral reef once again teeming with life. But the rebound came with a big question: Could the enormous and presumably still fragile coral survive what would be the hottest year on record? This month, the Massachusetts-based research team…

Tuvalu – Still Drowning After All These Years

Climatism comment : South Pacific Islands are not sinking, they are in fact growing. Claims they are sinking due to global warming driven sea level rise are opportunistic.
However, alarmists never cared for empirical data, especially when it debunks their spurious climate lies.

44th Pacific “Sinking Islands” Extortion Forum (COP21 Update 2015)

“We live in constant fear of the adverse impacts of climate change. For a coral atoll nation, sea level rise and more severe weather events loom as a growing threat to our entire population. The threat is real and serious, and is of no difference to a slow and insidious form of terrorism against us.

Sinking islands call for NZ action – NZ Herald 3/9/2013

MAJURO, Marshall Islands – A tense opening session of the 44th Pacific Islands Forum has been dominated by appeals from Pacific leaders for ‘real action’ against the threat of rising sea levels associated with climate change.

Current status of sea level rise within the region:

 THE MARSHALL ISLANDS

Since the end of the last ice age, The Marshall Islands have survived 130 metres of sea-level rise, but the last 1.43mm/year since 1950 is going to sink them, therefore compensation must be paid for by Western nations!

NOAA tide gauge in the Marshall Islands shows sea level rising at 1.43 mm/year – less than 15cm per century *

* NOTE from WattsUpWithThat on Marshall Islands and their sea level changes:

This is the sea level graph (from Kwajalein) recently being circulated and claimed to show an alarming acceleration of a proposed general sea level rise.

Yes, this curve rises fairly rapidly from 1990 to 2012. But for what reason and with what regional message?

clip_image002

This is a sea level graph (from Majuro) and is shows a general sea level stability from 1992 to 2010.

No traces of any acceleration!

clip_image004

It looks like Kwajalein is affected by a local subsidence induced by building construction (or some sea level “correction” in order to have it going up).

The Majuro records, for sure, contradicts and acceleration claim; even a general “rise”.

In conclusion, don’t “hang your hat” on the Kwajalein graph. Look around and observe!

Apparently no one attending the Pacific Forum bothered to read the latest science from New Zealand researchers on why many Pacific Islands are actually growing and not sinking:

NZ research shows Pacific islands [growing] not shrinking

From TV New Zealand:

An Auckland University researcher has offered new hope to the myriad small island nations in the Pacific which have loudly complained their low-lying atolls will drown as global warming boosts sea levels.

Geographer Associate Professor Paul Kench has measured 27 islands where local sea levels have risen 120mm – an average of 2mm a year – over the past 60 years, and found that just four had diminished in size.

Working with Arthur Webb at the Fiji-based South Pacific Applied Geoscience Commission, Kench used historical aerial photographs and high-resolution satellite images to study changes in the land area of the islands.

They found that the remaining 23 had either stayed the same or grown bigger, according to the research published in a scientific journal, Global and Planetary Change.

“It has been thought that as the sea level goes up, islands will sit there and drown,” Prof Kench told the New Scientist. “But they won’t.

UPDATE 2015

Two years has passed from first publishing this post, and there is still no sea-level rise in the Pacific islands that 40,000 COP21 Paris climate delegates and climate catastrophists assure you are “drowning”.

These are the same Pacific islands that Australia’s warmist PM, Malcolm Turnbull, has just granted USD $1,000,000,000 (One Thousand Million Dollars) to help stop a sea level rise that isn’t happening. Breathtaking insanity and a hubris that would make King Canute blush, ultimately defrauding Australian taxpayers of their hard-earned money.

Did anyone in the Australian government google “Pacific Island sea-level rise data” before pledging a billion to the UN? Silly question.

If someone in government had spent 10 minutes and 10 cents googling, they would have found no cause for concern at all :

Climate Change could turn Greenland, well, Green – Huffington Post 31/8/2013

Thanks to climate change, low-lying island nations may have to evacuate, and sooner than previously expected. Melting of the Greenland and west Antarctic ice sheets has been underestimated, scientists say, and populations in countries like the Maldives, Kiribati, Tuvalu and others may need to move within a decade.

Prior to the 2009, Copenhagen Climate Conference COP15, the Maldives Government devised an idiotic publicity stunt demonstrating how far some people are willing to go to prostitute their victimhood for financial gain:

Maldives Cabinet Signs Climate Change Document 20 Feet Under Sea

0_21_101709_maldives

GIRIFUSHI, Maldives –  Members of the Maldives’ Cabinet donned scuba gear and used hand signals Saturday at an underwater meeting staged to highlight the threat of global warming to the lowest-lying nation on earth.

With a backdrop of coral, the meeting was a bid to draw attention to fears that rising sea levels caused by the melting of polar ice caps could swamp this Indian Ocean archipelago within a century. Its islands average 7 feet above sea level.

“What we are trying to make people realize is that the Maldives is a frontline state. This is not merely an issue for the Maldives but for the world,” Nasheed said.

As bubbles floated up from their face masks, the president, vice president, Cabinet secretary and 11 ministers signed a document calling on all countries to cut their carbon dioxide emissions.

The issue has taken on urgency ahead of a major U.N. climate change conference scheduled for December in Copenhagen. Keep Reading »

Andy,

I just read your article on sea level alarm in the Maldives. You may not be aware of a study there by Nils-Axel Morner, a Swedish sea level expert (former president of the INQUA Commission of Sea Level Changes and Coastal Evolution). Attached is photographic evidence by Morner that sea level in the Maldives is not rising relative to the coasts but has indeed fallen! Global sea level has been rising at a rate of about a foot per century but the Maldives are either rising or subject to a local sea level anomaly related to ocean currents and evaporation rates. Thus, the ‘poster child’ of Gore’s sea level alarm is invalid.
